Ezra Eeman Tapped to Lead WAN-IFRA Artificial Intelligence Strategy
The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has named Ezra Eeman its new lead for artificial intelligence strategy and program development. Effective October 1, 2026, Eeman transitions from his post as Director of Strategy & Innovation at the Dutch public broadcaster NPO to anchor the organization’s global efforts in integrating AI into newsrooms and business models.
Bridging Technical Potential and Practical Application
WAN-IFRA is positioning itself as a central hub for media innovation, and Eeman’s mandate is to translate that ambition into action. He will oversee executive education, industry benchmarking, and the growth of specific initiatives, including the Newsroom AI Catalyst and the AI Futures Lab.

Stig Ørskov, Chief Executive Officer of WAN-IFRA, cited Eeman’s aptitude for bridging the gap between technical potential and practical implementation as the primary reason for his selection. Eeman is no stranger to the association; he has served as a strategic advisor for its AI initiatives since late 2024 and is a regular fixture at its global conferences.
A Mandate for 3,000 Publishers
Eeman will coordinate with a massive network comprising 60 member associations and 3,000 news publishing companies. His work aims to guide these organizations through the complex deployment of emerging technologies. His core responsibilities include:
- Executive Education: Developing leadership programs to help newsrooms manage digital transformation.
- Advisory Services: Providing benchmarks and research to help publishers evaluate AI tools.
- Strategic Partnerships: Facilitating collaboration between news organizations and technology providers.
“The challenge for publishers is no longer whether to embrace AI, but how to do so in a way that strengthens journalism, builds trust and creates sustainable business value,” Eeman said in a press release.
Deep Roots in European Media
Eeman brings a track record of newsroom transformation to the role. Prior to NPO, he held senior digital and innovation positions at Mediahuis, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and the Belgian public broadcaster VRT. His career has consistently focused on the application of emerging technologies within professional journalism.
Securing Competitiveness in an Algorithmic Era
WAN-IFRA represents 18,000 publications across 120 countries. With this appointment, the association aims to ensure its members remain competitive in an information ecosystem increasingly shaped by automated systems and algorithmic content distribution.
