Lewis announced his decision in an email to the newspaper’s staff. There he writes that “difficult decisions have been taken to ensure a sustainable future for The Post”.
The newspaper’s union says in a statement that it believes Lewis’ departure is too late.

The Washington Post lost thousands of subscribers after Bezos vetoed the newspaper’s leadership support for Kamala Harris in the election against Donald Trump in 2024, and ordered a more conservative twist in the newspaper’s traditionally liberal comment section.
