Cameron Dicker isn’t just any kicker. He’s a history maker. In a moment that caught the NFL off guard, Dicker successfully executed a free-kick field goal for the Los Angeles Chargers, a feat not seen since 1976.

The stage was set when the Denver Broncos committed a fair catch interference foul at the end of the second quarter. The Chargers saw their chance to capitalize on this rare penalty, and Dicker, ever prepared, stepped up to the challenge.

Dicker’s Remarkable Kick

Dicker’s 57-yard free-kick sailed through the uprights, giving the Chargers a crucial three points before halftime. The success stunned the Broncos’ sideline, who were visibly confused by the unexpected play.

“Looking over at their sideline was funny — they were confused what was going on,” Dicker admitted postgame. “We talk about it every week, so it was a normal thing for us. But it’s funny to watch.”

This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. Dicker, alongside the Chargers’ special teams, practices free-kicks in their weekly Friday meeting. They even review a previous attempt from 2019 by then-Carolina kicker Joey Slye.

“We always watch that one and it’s fun to do,” Dicker said.

While the execution is similar to a regular field goal, Dicker emphasized the importance of being mentally prepared for the unique situation. This preparation, according to Dicker, comes from special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken and head coach Jim Harbaugh.

“Offense and stuff isn’t usually in there so they were all confused,” Dicker added. “They were like, ‘What’s going on here?’ So that was funny to hear…And so now, we just taught a bunch of people what’s going on.”

Dicker Makes History

Dicker’s impressive kick not only secured valuable points for the Chargers but also etched his name in NFL history. A kick that hadn’t been successful in nearly 50 years, is now a testament to Dicker’s talent and preparation.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” Dicker said. “I didn’t know that was the case. That’s a pretty cool thing to hear that. It’s pretty awesome.”
