Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Victory Over Celtics in Physical Matchup
Victor Wembanyama showcased a dominant performance, scoring 39 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 125-116 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. This win completed a season sweep of the contentious two-game series against the Celtics.
Wembanyama’s Stellar Performance
Wembanyama matched a career-high with eight 3-pointers, proving particularly effective from beyond the arc. He shot 8 for 15 on 3-pointers, contributing significantly to the Spurs’ offensive success. He also added 3 assists and 2 blocks to his stat line.
“I’m not going to complain about how they defended,” Wembanyama said after the match. “Reading the game, adapting to what the match dictates, has always been a strength and it’s what defines me. This is something I definitely don’t want to lose.”
A Physical and Chippy Game
The game was characterized by its physicality, and intensity. Early in the first half, Wembanyama briefly exited the game after being struck in the face by Sam Hauser’s arm, sustaining a blow to his nose, eye, and forehead.
“I was bleeding and it was super painful,” Wembanyama stated, downplaying the injury. “The nose is blocked but it’s okay: I don’t use it to play basketball!”
Brown’s Ejection and Tatum’s Return
Boston All-Star Jaylen Brown was ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls following an altercation with officials over a no-call. Brown had to be restrained by teammates after the initial technical foul assessment.
Jayson Tatum, in his third game back from a ruptured right Achilles tendon suffered on May 12, contributed 24 points for the Celtics. Derrick White led Boston with 34 points, while Stephon Castle added 18 points for San Antonio.
Spurs Secure the Win
With the score at 118-113 in favor of the Spurs with 1:43 remaining, Stephon Castle hit a crucial 3-pointer to seal the victory for San Antonio. The Spurs have now won five consecutive games.
Looking Ahead
The Celtics will next face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night. The Spurs will host the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.
