West Coast Faces Dangerous Heat Wave
A heat wave is expected to bring record high temperatures to parts of teh west Coast this week, putting millions at risk of sizzling heat and wildfires.
Areas of Oregon, California, and Washington could see temperatures near 100°F. Heat warnings are in place until Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) said this heat will be dangerous for anyone without good cooling or enough water.thay wrote this in a forecast discussion on Monday.
The NWS also warned that it will stay hot even at night, as temperatures won’t drop much. As of Monday morning, almost 8 million Americans were under heat alerts, according to the National integrated Heat Health Information System.
“For many areas, there will be little relief from the heat at night, which can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses,” the NWS said. Cities like Sacramento and Redding, California, are expected to be especially hot.
The heat also increases the risk of wildfires. Dry grass and brush can easily catch fire in these conditions. Firefighters are preparing for potential outbreaks.
Officials are urging people to take precautions:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
- Check on family and neighbors.
- Never leave children or pets in cars.
