WhatsApp Plus: Meta’s New Paid Subscription Tier
Since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp has been a free-to-use platform, becoming the go-to choice for connecting with friends and family for billions of users worldwide. However, that may be changing as Meta reportedly prepares to introduce an optional paid subscription plan called WhatsApp Plus.
WhatsApp Plus: An Optional Paid Subscription
The introduction of WhatsApp Plus isn’t entirely unexpected, as Meta announced in January 2026 its plans to test premium tiers for its platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook [Digit]. The WhatsApp Plus subscription will offer additional features to paying customers, focusing on app customization and enhanced chat controls [Digit]. Currently, the subscription is in development for both iOS and Android.
For users who choose not to subscribe, WhatsApp’s core functions – messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, and privacy options – will remain free [Digit], [Times Now], [CNBCTV18]. The subscription is designed to enhance convenience rather than fundamentally altering the messaging experience.
Customization and New Chat Features
One key feature of WhatsApp Plus will be an expanded chat pinning capability. Currently, users can pin up to three chats. The subscription may increase this limit to 20, allowing users to keep more important conversations readily accessible [Times Now], [CNBCTV18].
Subscribers will also gain access to a range of customization options. These include the ability to choose from 14 different app icons and adjust accent colors with 19 color options [CNBCTV18], [Times Now]. Changing the accent color will affect other interface elements, such as tabs, filters, and action buttons.
Additional features potentially included in the subscription plan are exclusive stickers, custom ringtones specifically for WhatsApp calls, and more expressive message reactions [CNBCTV18], [Times Now]. WhatsApp may add more features over time based on user feedback.
Pricing and Availability
As of March 9, 2026, WhatsApp Plus has not been officially launched and remains in development [Digit]. Pricing information is currently unavailable. WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a waitlist option within the Android beta version 2.26.9.6, allowing users to be notified when the premium plan becomes available [Digit]. However, signing up for the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment in the paid service upon launch. The waitlist feature is currently limited to a select number of beta testers in certain regions, with plans to expand availability in the coming weeks.
