St. Januario Reform Law will be sanctioned and work already has a date to start

The law authorizing the reform of Estádio São Januário, home of Vasco da Gama, will be sanctioned this Tuesday (9) by Governor Cláudio Castro. The declaration was made by the president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), Deputy André Ceciliano, after a meeting with representatives of Vasco and the state government.

The project, which provides for an investment of R$450 million, foresees the modernization of the stadium, increasing its capacity to 21,880 spectators, and also the construction of a new parking lot and commercial areas. The work is expected to begin in September of this year and be completed in 2026.

“We managed to create a legal framework that allows Vasco to reform São Januário, preserving its history and architectural value, but also making it a modern and safe stadium,” said Ceciliano.

The reform will be carried out in stages, to allow Vasco to continue playing at São Januário during the work. The first phase will focus on the demolition of the existing stands and the construction of the new ones. The second phase will involve the construction of the new parking lot and commercial areas.

The project is considered strategic for Vasco, as it will allow the club to increase its revenue and improve the experience of its fans. In addition, the reform will contribute to the revitalization of the São Januário neighborhood.

Team News and Tactical Outlook

Independiente del Valle boasts a fully fit squad, with coach Javier Rabanal welcoming back key players richard Schunke, Mateo Carabajal, and Claudio Spinelli following their suspensions in the previous match against Macará. This influx of talent provides Rabanal with greater tactical flexibility and depth. Independiente del Valle currently holds a strong home record in the competition, having won 7 of their last 10 matches at the Atahualpa Stadium.

Vasco, unfortunately, faces a significant setback with the absence of star midfielder Philippe Coutinho. He experienced a calf issue during the loss to Botafogo and was deemed unfit to travel. Adding to their woes, Adson remains sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a tibia fracture. This double blow necessitates a reshuffling of Vasco’s midfield and possibly impacts their attacking creativity.Vasco’s recent form has been inconsistent, winning only 2 of their last 5 away games, raising concerns about their ability to perform effectively in Quito’s challenging altitude.

Projected Starting Lineups

Independiente del Valle: Guido Villar; Matías Fernández, Mateo Carabajal, Schunke, Gustavo Cortez; Jordy Alcívar, Ronald Briones, Juan Cazares; Darwin Guagua, Emerson Pata, and Claudio Spinelli.(Manager: Javier Rabanal)

Vasco da Gama: Leo Jardim; Paulo Henrique, João Victor, Lucas Freitas, Lucas Piton; Hugo Moura, Tchê Tchê, Garré (potentially Alex Teixeira); Nuno Moreira, Rayan, and Vegetti. (Manager: Fernando Diniz)

Key Battlegrounds and Anticipated Strategies

The midfield battle will be crucial. Independiente del Valle’s dynamic trio of Alcívar, Briones, and Cazares will aim to control possession and dictate the tempo. Vasco will need Tchê Tchê and Moura to effectively disrupt their play and provide a platform for their attacking players.

Moreover, the altitude of Quito (approximately 9,350 feet) presents a significant challenge for Vasco. Adapting to the thinner air will be paramount, and Fernando Diniz may opt for a more conservative approach, prioritizing defensive solidity and quick counter-attacks. Independiente del Valle, accustomed to the conditions, will likely employ a high-pressing strategy, attempting to exploit Vasco’s fatigue and capitalize on turnovers.

The success of vasco’s attack will heavily rely on the performance of Rayan and Vegetti. They will need to effectively exploit any space created by the midfield and pose a constant threat to Independiente del Valle’s defense.

Looking ahead: South American Competition Landscape

This match is more than just a single game; it’s a crucial step in the broader South American 2025 tournament. The competition is known for its intense rivalries and unpredictable outcomes, with teams from across the continent battling for continental glory and coveted qualification spots for other prestigious tournaments. The South American Cup consistently showcases emerging talent and provides a platform for players to gain international recognition, much like Enzo Fernández, who rose to prominence playing in the competition before securing a move to Benfica and Chelsea.
