Wicked: From Page to Screen, a Journey Filled with Stars

Long before the 2023 release of Jon M. Chu’s highly anticipated film adaptation, Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel *Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West* captivated audiences and set Hollywood ablaze. The novel’s success spawned a frenzy of interest, with numerous A-list actresses vying for the opportunity to portray the iconic Wicked Witch of the West.

Early Contenders for the Lead Role

Maguire himself revealed in 2023 that Whoopi Goldberg was actively pursuing the rights to adapt the novel shortly after its release. “This is true,” Goldberg’s representative told *Vanity Fair*. “Whoopi loved the book and tried hard to get the rights.”

Maguire also shared that Goldberg wasn’t alone in her pursuit. “People who had expressed an interest in the first six months included Whoopi Goldberg and Claire Danes. Salma Hayek had had some interest, and Laurie Metcalf,” he recalled.

Demi Moore emerged as another strong contender, even opting to secure the rights through her production company, Moving Pictures. Moore’s existing relationship with Universal could have streamlined the film’s production, further igniting the buzz surrounding the project.

Suzanne Todd, Moore’s producing partner, shed light on the actresses considered for the role of Glinda alongside Moore. Among them were Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson, and Nicole Kidman.

Broadway’s Enchanting Legacy

Before reaching the big screen, *Wicked* found its magic on Broadway. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman transformed Maguire’s novel into a Tony-winning musical, with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth captivating audiences as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.

The Big Screen Success

Chu’s adaptation stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, their journey bringing the timeless story to life anew. Joined by Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, the film has shattered box office records, generating $164.2 million worldwide in its opening weekend alone.

The film has also received critical acclaim, earning four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande.
