Winrevair Recognized as Breakthrough PAH Treatment at Fundamed Awards
The 25th edition of the Fundamed Awards honored MSD’s Winrevair (sotatercept) as Medicamento del Año, recognizing its role as the first approved therapy targeting the activin signaling pathway for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
What is Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension?
PAH, a rare progressive disease affecting lung blood vessels, causes dangerous pressure increases that strain the heart. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 30,000 EU residents live with PAH, which carries a 43% five-year mortality rate and significantly impacts daily life for 56% of patients, per a 2024 study in the European Respiratory Journal.
How Does Winrevair Work?
Winrevair inhibits activin, restoring balance between pro- and anti-proliferative signals to address PAH’s cellular overgrowth. This mechanism differs from existing treatments that only manage symptoms, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.
Clinical Trial Results
Results from the Phase III STELLAR trial showed patients taking sotatercept improved their 6-minute walk distance by 40.8 meters compared to placebo (p<0.001). The drug also reduced the risk of death or clinical worsening by 82%, including hospitalizations and transplant listings, per the EMA’s 2024 approval report.

Why This Matters for PAH Patients
PAH predominantly affects women of middle age, with current therapies offering limited long-term benefits. The drug’s approval expands treatment options for patients in WHO functional classes II-IV, as noted by the Spanish Society of Cardiology.
Other Award Nominees
Winrevair competed against therapies for breast cancer, bladder cancer, and metabolic liver disease. Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecán) and Imfinzi (durvalumab) also received recognition for oncology advancements, according to Fundamed’s official announcement.
