WOODVILLE – The Woodville ISD Board of Trustees heard a presentation from Austin Coker, the tennis program’s head coach, at the regular monthly board meeting on Monday evening.
Growing Demand for Tennis facilities
Coker presented a case for new tennis courts at the Woodville high School campus, citing increased student interest in the program. Currently, 30 athletes share just four courts, creating notable logistical challenges.
“This causes a lot of problems, practice-wise,” Coker explained. “It leads to a lot of kids standing around, waiting their turn.”
Current Court Conditions and Safety Concerns
Beyond overcrowding,Coker highlighted the deteriorating condition of the existing courts. He noted cracks in the foundations and chipped surfaces, presenting photographic evidence to the board.
“We’re having big, gaping holes in the court,” he said, emphasizing the uneven playing surfaces pose a safety risk to both student athletes and community members who use the facilities.
Long-Term Solution: New Construction
Coker stated that repairs to the current courts, originally constructed in the 1980s, would only be a temporary fix. He explained that the original construction method makes extensive repair impractical.
Proposed expansion
The proposed solution involves constructing new courts, increasing the total number from four to between five and eight. This expansion would alleviate overcrowding and provide a safer, more functional facility.
Key Takeaways
- Increased student participation in the tennis program is straining existing resources.
- Current tennis courts are deteriorating and present safety hazards.
- Repairing the existing courts is considered a short-term solution due to their original construction.
- Expanding to five to eight courts is proposed to meet current and future needs.
The Board of Trustees did not promptly announce a decision regarding coker’s proposal. Further discussion and budgetary considerations are expected at future meetings.
Looking ahead, the Woodville ISD will need to carefully weigh the costs and benefits of new tennis court construction against the growing demand for the sport and the importance of providing safe, quality facilities for its students and the community.
