Woman Charged Following Retirement Village Burglary Spree in West Auckland

A 60-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a series of burglaries targeting retirement villages in West Auckland, New Zealand. The arrest comes as police continue to investigate similar incidents at villages across the Auckland region.

Details of the Offenses

Police have laid five charges against the woman so far, relating to a spree of offending that occurred on a single day in late January. Three residents were reportedly victims of burglary, with expensive jewelry and cash allegedly stolen. The estimated value of the stolen items is nearly $8,000 .

The woman faces three counts of burglary and two counts of being unlawfully in a building. She is scheduled to appear in the Waitākere District Court today .

Ongoing Investigation

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting, Waitematā West Area Investigations Manager, stated that inquiries are ongoing into recent burglaries reported at other Auckland retirement villages. Further charges have not been ruled out .

“It’s unfortunate when vulnerable members of the community are targeted in this matter, and we will oppose the woman’s bail at her court appearance,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting said .

Police are reminding residents of retirement villages to be vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves. Key advice includes:

  • Being mindful of people who may be out of place in the village.
  • Keeping an eye out for neighbors.
