Tongyeong World Cup Triathlon: A Battle of Speed and Strength
The Tongyeong World Cup Triathlon is back for its 17th edition, promising another thrilling competition in the heart of South Korea. This year’s race, held over the standard distance, will see athletes tackle a challenging course that tests their swimming, cycling, and running prowess.
A Challenging Course
The race will begin with two laps in the sea covering 1500 meters, followed by a grueling 40km bike course featuring six laps with steep climbs reaching up to 15% gradients. Finally, the athletes will finish with a four-lap 10km run around the picturesque harbor.
Top Contenders Ready to Rumble
The women’s race, starting at 08:00 local time (01:00 CEST) on Saturday, boasts a strong field of athletes, many of whom have already tasted World Cup podium success in recent months. You can catch all the action live on TriathlonLive.
Autumn Form on Display
This year’s edition features several athletes in peak form, including Alissa Konig (SUI) and Jolien Vermeylen (BEL), who recently battled for the podium in Rome. Konig, with her stunning silver medal in Rome, will be looking to prove her podium performance wasn’t a fluke. Vermeylen, a multiple World Cup medalist, will be determined to finally secure her first World Cup victory.
Gina Sereno (USA) is another force to be reckoned with. Her bronze medal in Karlovy Vary, achieved over the standard distance, coupled with her impressive 8th place finish at the WTCS Weihai, demonstrates her current dominance on the circuit.
Returning Champions Seek Redemption
Two American teammates, Tamara Gorman and Summer Rappaport, are making their way back to full strength after injury setbacks. Gorman, a former World U23 and World Junior champion, and Rappaport, a multiple WTCS medalist, are both capable of challenging for the top spot.
Sandra Dodet (FRA), the reigning World Cup gold medalist, will also be looking to reclaim her winning form after a challenging 2023. Her recent triumph as European champion in the super sprint format is a promising sign.
Dark Horses and Rising Stars
Sian Rainsley (GBR), the winner of the Hong Kong World Cup earlier this year, and Ainsley Thorpe (NZL), another World Cup medalist, will be looking to upset the favorites. Tereza Zimovjanova (CZE), who secured bronze in Tongyeong last year, is also a contender to watch. Lastly, Manami Hayashi (JPN), a rising star with four consecutive wins at Asia Cup events, could potentially challenge for a podium finish.
The History Speaks
The Tongyeong World Cup has historically favored strong runners. Since 2013, the fastest runner has won nine out of ten women’s races. While breakaways are possible, athletes who excel in the final run will likely have the upper hand.
