Worried about stomach cancer? It’s a growing concern in India.

While cancers like lung, breast, and cervical cancer often steal the spotlight, stomach cancer is quietly becoming a significant health issue in India. The country is witnessing a concerning rise in gastric cancer cases, with over 60,000 diagnoses every year. This trend stands in stark contrast to the global decline in stomach cancer incidence.

The Prevalence of Stomach Cancer in India

Stomach cancer ranks among the top 10 most prevalent cancers in India, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. The northeastern states, including Mizoram, Sikkim, and Nagaland, report the highest incidents. This regional disparity can be attributed to a combination of factors, such as dietary habits, genetic predispositions, and socioeconomic conditions.

Men are particularly vulnerable, facing a three times higher risk of developing stomach cancer compared to women.

Challenges in Diagnosing Stomach Cancer in India

A major challenge in combating stomach cancer in India is its late-stage diagnosis. Many cases are only detected when the cancer has progressed significantly, leading to a lower survival rate.

Symptoms of stomach cancer often appear vague and nonspecific, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. However, persistent indigestion, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting (especially with blood), loss of appetite, and ongoing fatigue accompanied by unexplained anemia warrant immediate evaluation.

Early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates, with a five-year survival rate dropping from 75% to a mere 7% when cancer is detected at advanced stages.

Why Stomach Cancer Cases Are Rising in India

Several factors contribute to the alarming rise in stomach cancer cases in India:

  • Diet: Diets rich in salted, smoked, pickled foods, and processed meats increase the risk of stomach cancer. Conversely, diets lacking fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants, exacerbate the risk.
  • H. pylori Infection: Poor sanitation and overcrowded living conditions contribute to a higher prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, a major risk factor for stomach cancer.
  • Lifestyle Habits: Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and obesity are known risk factors for stomach cancer. These habits are prevalent across various communities, increasing the overall risk.
  • Genetics: Family history of stomach cancer increases an individual’s susceptibility to the disease.

Addressing the Challenge: Prevention and Early Detection

The growing number of stomach cancer cases in India calls for urgent action. Improving awareness campaigns, ensuring access to quality healthcare facilities, promoting balanced diets rich in fruits and vegetables, addressing H. pylori infections, and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices are crucial steps in curbing this cancer’s rise.

Early detection remains paramount. Consult your doctor if you experience persistent digestive issues or other concerning symptoms. Remember, early treatment significantly improves outcomes.
