Yellow Fever Vaccination Campaign: Protecting Travelers to Colombia & Beyond
Costa Rica is currently conducting a targeted yellow fever vaccination campaign, primarily aimed at individuals planning travel to Colombia in July. This initiative comes amidst ongoing concerns about yellow fever outbreaks in various regions of South America and Africa, and reflects a proactive approach to public health.
Limited Availability & High Demand
Initial vaccination dates, July 4th and 5th, experienced exceptionally high demand, with all 500 daily doses being allocated within minutes. This underscores the importance of prompt action when future appointment slots are released. The Ministry of Health is releasing further appointment opportunities for dates between July 14-19 and July 21-24. Individuals are encouraged to monitor official channels for announcements regarding the release of these forms.
Accessing Vaccination: Appointments can be secured through the official Ministry of Health website: https://www.ministeriodesalud.go.cr/citas/citas.html. The online platform requires basic personal information to determine eligibility and schedule an appointment.
Who is Eligible?
This vaccination drive is specifically intended for individuals with confirmed travel plans to Colombia during the month of July. it’s crucial to understand that the vaccine is not universally available and is being prioritized based on this travel criterion. This targeted approach allows for efficient allocation of limited resources.
Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports a concerning increase in yellow fever cases in Colombia, particularly in areas with low vaccination coverage. this situation prompted the Costa Rican Ministry of Health to focus its initial efforts on protecting residents traveling to the affected regions.
Strict Verification & Consequences of Misrepresentation
The Ministry of Health is implementing a rigorous verification process. Applicants are required to complete a legally binding affidavit confirming they meet the eligibility criteria – namely, having a confirmed trip to Colombia in July.
Minister of Health Mary Munive angermüller has emphasized that any false information provided in the affidavit will result in legal repercussions and denial of the vaccine. This firm stance is designed to ensure the vaccine reaches those who genuinely need it and to prevent misuse of limited resources. Think of it like a concert ticket with a name on it – attempting to use someone else’s ticket will result in being turned away.
Extended Protection: Beyond Colombia
While the initial focus is on Colombia, exemptions remain in place for travelers heading to other destinations currently experiencing yellow fever activity. This includes countries in South America and Africa.
Specifically, the exception applies until August 31st to: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guayana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and various countries across the African continent. Travelers to these regions should consult with a healthcare professional to determine if vaccination is recommended, even if they don’t fall within the current campaign’s primary focus.
Vaccination Location & Schedule
Vaccinations are being administered at the National Stadium. The current schedule is daily from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This centralized location facilitates efficient vaccine distribution and monitoring.
It is indeed critically important to stay informed about the evolving situation and any updates to the vaccination campaign through official Ministry of Health channels. Protecting yourself and others requires responsible travel planning and adherence to public health guidelines.
