Why Young People Are Eating Pudding with a Fork
Meetings in Several Cities
It sounds nonsensical at first: young people are meeting up to eat pudding together – with a fork instead of a spoon. What began as a social media trend is also seen by the organizers as a “release valve for the present day.”
Absurd theater – or simply tasty, but tough to eat? In Hanover, more than a thousand young people gathered for a communal pudding-eating event – using a fork instead of a spoon. What sounds like an absurd idea is a trend on social media that has gained many followers. Primarily, young people come together and poke around in the pudding with a fork. The whole thing is filmed and posted online.
In Hanover, a meme page with almost 145,000 followers is behind the pudding meetup. Memes are predominantly funny or satirical content, often images or videos that spread quickly online.
“It’s about doing something silly together, being offline and having a good time,” says Leon Schmidt, one of the organizers. “We noticed that a lot of people are stressed and overwhelmed. That’s why we wanted to create an event where people can switch off and just have fun.”
The idea came from a video on TikTok, Schmidt explains. “Someone ate pudding with a fork and it looked so funny that we thought we had to do that too.” The response was overwhelming. Within a short time, the event was fully booked.
Similar meetings are now planned in other cities, including berlin and Hamburg. The organizers are hoping for a similar level of interest.”we want to show that it’s okay to be silly and to not always take life so seriously,” says Schmidt. “Sometimes you just need to eat pudding with a fork.”
The trend is not without criticism. Some people find it pointless and wasteful. Others worry that it could lead to messy situations. But the organizers are unfazed. “We’re not trying to solve the world’s problems,” says Schmidt. “We just want to make people smile.”
