Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that Ukraine will hold elections only after security guarantees have been received and a ceasefire with Russia has come into effect.
“We will proceed to the elections when all the necessary security guarantees have been received,” Zelensky told reporters.
The British newspaper “Financial Times”, citing sources, reported that Ukraine has begun planning presidential elections and a referendum on a peace treaty with Russia after the administration of US President Donald Trump demanded that Kyiv hold a vote by May 15, threatening to deny security guarantees otherwise.
The newspaper reported that Zelensky is set to announce a plan to hold a presidential election and referendum on February 24, four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Zelensky denied that the US would threaten to withdraw security guarantees if Ukraine did not announce a date for presidential elections. He said the US does not link security guarantees to elections.
“I have said that it is very easy to do – a truce must be reached, and there will be elections,” Zelensky emphasized.
