Kyiv, Ukraine – ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticized China, accusing it of enabling Russia’s war in Ukraine through its silence and economic support. He stated that without China, “Putin’s Russia is nothing,” and urged Beijing to actively work towards peace by pressuring Moscow to end the invasion. Zelenskyy made these remarks during a speech at a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting focused on Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s Direct Accusations

Addressing the UN Security Council, Zelenskyy highlighted China’s notable influence over Russia. He asserted that if China genuinely desired an end to the conflict,it possessed the leverage to compel Russia to halt its aggression. “[China] is a strong state, on which Russia now completely depends,” Zelenskyy stated. “If China really wanted this war to end, it could force Moscow to stop this invasion.” Though, he lamented that China “remains silent and distant rather of acting for the sake of peace.”

Contrasting US Support with China’s Stance

Zelenskyy contrasted China’s perceived inaction with the strong support Ukraine has received from the United States. He emphasized that Ukraine has consistently responded positively to US President Biden’s proposals for a ceasefire and negotiations with Russia. “We always saeid ‘yes’ for every proposal of the US president to stop fire and negotiate with Russia to achieve peace,” zelenskyy explained. However, he noted that Russia has consistently rejected these overtures, or attempted to obstruct any progress towards a truce.

Putin’s Avoidance of Genuine Negotiation

Zelenskyy also reiterated his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not genuinely interested in negotiating a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He claimed Putin only appears to seek diplomacy as a means of stalling for time and continuing attacks. He further stated he shared his concerns about China’s lack of engagement with former US President Donald Trump.

China’s Position on the Conflict

China has maintained a publicly neutral stance on the war in Ukraine, calling for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and negotiation. However,it has refrained from condemning Russia’s actions and has continued to maintain economic ties with moscow. These ties have led to concerns in the West that China is providing tacit support to Russia, enabling its war effort.According to the Reuters, China-Russia trade reached a record $240 billion in 2023.
