Zurich Racetrack Transforms into Multi-Sport Training Hub
The Oerlikon racetrack in Zurich, traditionally a venue for cycling, is undergoing a temporary transformation into a training facility for American football, rugby, and cheerleading. This initiative addresses a growing demand for sports spaces within the city, providing crucial training grounds for local clubs, particularly during the winter months.
A Unique Solution to Limited Space
For the first time in its 114-year history, the open Oerlikon racetrack is hosting sports beyond cycling. Special artificial turf was laid in mid-December, enabling year-round training even in inclement weather. The project, a collaboration between the IG ACR (the interest group for football, rugby, and cheerleading) and the Zurich Sports Office, aims to alleviate the increasing demand for sports areas in Zurich. The city is investing approximately 150,000 Swiss francs in the artificial turf.
Zurich Renegades Lead the Way
The Zurich Renegades, Switzerland’s oldest American football club founded in 1983, were the first to utilize the new training facility, commencing practice on January 5th. While the available space (45 by 76 meters) is smaller than a standard American football field (49 by 110 meters), it provides a valuable training environment.
Temporary Transformation
The artificial turf will remain in place until the end of March, when it will be dismantled and stored to allow for the resumption of regular cycling activities in April. The turf will be reinstalled in October, creating a seasonal training solution. During the winter months, sports clubs will have access to cloakrooms at the Neudorf sports facility, and composting toilets have been installed to accommodate the increased usage.
Looking Ahead
This innovative use of existing infrastructure demonstrates Zurich’s commitment to supporting its diverse sporting community. By creatively repurposing the Oerlikon racetrack, the city is providing valuable training opportunities for athletes and fostering the growth of American football, rugby, and cheerleading in the region.
