Record Dolphin Pod Sighting Stuns Wellington, Latest Zealand
Wellington, New Zealand – An exceptionally large pod of dolphins, estimated to number around 200, captivated onlookers off the south coast of Wellington on Saturday, March 14, 2026. The sighting, described by witnesses as the largest they’ve ever seen, drew attention from locals and marine enthusiasts alike.
A Spectacular Sight in Houghton Bay
Bruce Trevarthen, a local resident, first spotted the dolphins while driving along Houghton Bay. He immediately pulled over to document the incredible scene. “I jumped out and started to take some photos and videos of them, but there were so many—there was a little pod in close but that was sort of connected to two or three other pods and then 200-300m offshore there was an even bigger cluster,” Trevarthen told 1News.
Trevarthen noted the difficulty in obtaining an exact count due to many dolphins being submerged, but estimated the pod size to be close to 200. He expressed gratitude for having a high-quality camera to capture the event, though even it struggled to encompass the sheer scale of the gathering.
Close Encounters for Kayakers
Adding to the remarkable nature of the sighting, a kayaker found herself surrounded by the pod. Trevarthen recounted that the woman was paddling along the shore when she was “engulfed” by dolphins. She wisely responded by raising her oars and allowing the dolphins to pass through, appreciating the unique experience.
Orca Sightings Also Reported
The marine spectacle wasn’t limited to dolphins. Reports also surfaced of orca sightings across Wellington bays, including Island Bay, Princess Bay, and Pariwhero/Red Rocks, according to RNZ. One observer described an “unreal encounter” with a pod of orca in Island Bay, noting they came closer to shore than ever before.
Respecting Marine Life
The Department of Conservation (DOC) reminds the public to maintain a respectful distance from dolphins and avoid disturbing them. Guidelines include avoiding loud noises, refraining from swimming with dolphins when calves are present, and never attempting to touch or feed the animals. DOC emphasizes the importance of responsible wildlife observation to ensure the safety and well-being of these marine mammals. EuropeSays

Trevarthen described the dolphin encounter as transforming an already pleasant day into a “magical” experience. The unusual gathering highlights the rich marine biodiversity of the Wellington coastline.
