[3분 신화극장] Naga‘s ‘Promise of a Serpent from Heaven’
hello. This is Mihee Kim. Myths are not records of gods, but portraits of humans who harbor both fear and hope. That’s why myths survive longer than history and awaken as stories in the heart of our hearts. [3분 신화극장]seeks to look into the essence of humans through the gods. Now, let’s go together. Let’s go.
Today, I will tell you a story handed down from northeastern India, a land where the edge of the Himalayas meets the jungle, an old myth of the Nagas, ‘The Promise of a Serpent from the Sky’.
A long time ago, there were still more forests than roads in the world and the languages of humans and beasts were not completely separated. It is said that at that time, the ancestors of the Naga people were born from Naga, a giant snake that came down from the sky. The snake was not a being of fear, but a heavenly messenger carrying rain, abundance, and wisdom. One day, the Mother of Snakes appeared in human form and spoke to the people.
“The memory of the forest flows through your blood. Hold your promise before your sword.”
So the Nagas learned ritual before war, and balance before conquest. Snake patterns were carved on the pillars of the house, and stories of ancestors were hung on the door. The snake was their guardian spirit and a sign of the way back to the forest. But humans always face tests. On the day when the young warrior was about to kill the sacred snake deep in the forest to prove his valor, the sky suddenly closed and the rain stopped. The earth split apart, and the songs disappeared from people’s dreams. Then the oldest shaman knelt before the snake skin and said:
“We are born in blood, but we live by promises.”
It is said that with those words, the rain drenched the forest again and the dead snake disappeared into the water and became a river. And the Naga old men sit around the fire and say this for the last time. It is said that the day a person leaves the land, his body returns to dust, but the memory of keeping his promise remains in the forest. So there are few roads in the Naga forest. This is because they do not cut carelessly and do not move around carelessly. The wind and shadows gliding between the trees still whisper and connect like the veins of our ancestors.
“We are not the descendants of serpents, but people who have kept their promises.”
Tonight, if the wind twists and turns unusually long in the forest, it may be the mark of a snake. Not as a sign of fear, but as a signal to remember.
One small drama, [3분 신화극장] That’s it for today. I was reporter Kim Mi-hee. thank you
