TEHRAN,January 16,2026 – Iranian security officials have detained approximately 3,000 individuals accused of involvement in recent protests and unrest across the country, according to a report by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency. The detentions come as authorities attempt to quell demonstrations that initially began in late December.

The individuals taken into custody include alleged leaders of the protests, individuals accused of affiliation with Israel, armed participants, and those implicated in damaging public property and causing casualties. Iranian officials claim the unrest was fueled by external actors seeking to destabilize the nation.

The protests were initially triggered by economic grievances, specifically the significant depreciation of the Iranian rial. while authorities have acknowledged the economic concerns and expressed willingness to address them, they have strongly condemned violence, vandalism, and acts of unrest. The demonstrations escalated in early January, resulting in damage to public infrastructure, including mosques, government buildings, and banks.

Iranian authorities have publicly blamed the United States and Israel for instigating the violence and attempting to prolong the unrest. The government maintains that a sense of calm has been restored in recent days, despite ongoing efforts to reignite the protests. Further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the alleged foreign involvement and to prosecute those responsible for the violence and damage.
