opel Develops dialogue System Using Car Lights for Autonomous Driving
The development of partly and fully autonomous management systems is a major focus for automakers today. Opel, however, recently showcased innovative ways to communicate with pedestrians using car lighting at a dedicated conference.
The system was implemented on a prototype Opel Grandland equipped with a Level 3 partially autonomous steering system, allowing drivers to temporarily remove their hands from the wheel without constant road monitoring, while remaining ready to take control.
to enable these autonomous functions, the vehicle received a new camera system and AI-powered software capable of recognizing pedestrian gestures and adapting accordingly. The system is also designed to anticipate risk scenarios, such as pedestrians emerging from between parked cars or children running into the road.
When the Grandland activates its autonomous system, the front and rear light strips illuminate in azure. If a pedestrian is detected at a crossing, the light mask turns purple, displaying warning symbols in place of the Opel logo.
Simultaneously, the car slows down, and once stopped, the light mask turns green, signaling safe passage for the pedestrian. If the system cannot confidently assess the situation, it promptly prompts the driver to resume control.
Opel Develops Color-Coded System to Enhance Autonomous Vehicle Communication
Opel is developing a new communication system for its autonomous vehicles, utilizing unconventional colors – azure and purple – to signal the vehicle’s intentions to pedestrians and other drivers. This innovation, spearheaded by Opel’s Rüsselsheim department in collaboration with TU darmstadt, aims to improve road safety by clearly indicating when the vehicle is slowing down.
The system employs a green hue to highlight the area in front of the car where a safe transition can be made, mirroring the signaling of traffic lights. This visual cue is designed to alert those nearby that the vehicle is decelerating.https://www.garaz.cz/clanek/testy-prvni-dojmy-to-nejlepsi-od-opelu-novy-grandland-si-ve-vsem-polepsil-a-ma-spickova-svetla-21013519
This development echoes a similar concept originating from Slovakia, which proposed integrating a green front brake light into the vehicle’s design for the same purpose – to proactively warn others of impending deceleration.
