Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto to Steer Global Stage at Upcoming APEC and G20 Summits
Less than a month after his inauguration, Indonesia’s eighth president, Prabowo Subianto, will take the international spotlight at the APEC and G20 summits in Peru and Brazil, respectively. This pivotal trip in November will offer President Subianto a platform to outline his foreign policy vision for the next five years on a global scale.
Navigating Economic and Geopolitical Challenges
The President’s journey will begin in Peru, where he’ll participate in the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. This will be followed by the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Brazil. While both APEC and G20 membership represent significant diplomatic weight, they operate on a framework of voluntary commitments rather than legally binding agreements. APEC is geographically based, while G20 membership is determined by individual member states’ GDP.
This year’s G20 Summit holds particular importance amidst global challenges. From the ongoing developments in the Middle East to the ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the summit serves as a crucial platform for global leaders to collaborate on issues ranging from economic recovery and global health security to conflict resolution.
The 2022 G20 summit, hosted by Indonesia, navigated a delicate geopolitical landscape when Russia invaded Ukraine. Western countries considered boycotting the event after Indonesia invited President Vladimir Putin. However, the summit proceeded smoothly after Putin opted not to attend the Bali meeting in person.
An Opportunity for Global Cooperation
The 2022 G20 summit also saw an emphasis on post-pandemic recovery efforts. While the World Health Organization now spearheads this effort, the urgent need to prepare for future pandemics through collaborative resilience building remains paramount. Advocacy for the swift completion and ratification of a pandemic treaty and related instruments is therefore crucial.
Various G20 working groups, such as Youth 20, have issued consensus-based communiqués outlining priorities for discussion by leaders in Brazil. One persistent challenge facing even G20 members is the need to reform and strengthen the global economic and trade architecture.
President Subianto’s participation in these high-profile summits presents a unique opportunity to for Indonesia to champion a constructive, collaborative approach to navigating global challenges and shaping the future of international cooperation.
