A woman from North Belfast experienced a harrowing ordeal after her drink was spiked on her 18th birthday, leading to a coma and the unexpected discovery of a pregnancy upon waking. Laura Taggart, now 20, suffered a cardiac arrest and required emergency medical intervention.
The Incident and Initial Medical Crisis
Laura Taggart was celebrating her 18th birthday with friends while walking down Shankill Road when she suddenly began experiencing seizures. She was immediately taken to the Mater Hospital in Belfast. Upon arrival, she went into cardiac arrest, and her heart stopped for 16 minutes before medical staff were able to stabilize her and induce a coma Belfast Live.
The Unexpected Revelation
One week later, Laura awoke in intensive care, unaware of the events that had transpired. Doctors then informed her that she was pregnant. Despite facing complications during her pregnancy, including her waters breaking at 25 weeks and concerns about the baby’s survival, she carried the pregnancy to term.
Lucia’s Birth and Subsequent Health Challenges
Her daughter, Lucia, was born at 34 weeks via an emergency C-section, weighing 4lbs 11 ounces. Lucia required a month in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Following Lucia’s initial stabilization, Laura herself faced further health issues, including a severe chest infection that led to a bad asthma attack and required a central line placement in her neck.
“It went from me visiting Lucia in the NICU to her visiting me in the ICU,” Laura stated Belfast Live.
Recovery and a Plea for Awareness
After a period of recovery, including time in the Royal Intensive Care Unit where she faced the possibility of needing to be put to sleep again to aid lung healing, Laura and Lucia were able to begin their lives together in their first home. Laura expressed immense gratitude to her mother, who cared for Lucia during her hospital stays, and to the charity TinyLife for their support.
Laura emphasized the devastating consequences of drink spiking, stating, “I want people to understand drink spiking is not funny or a joke it can change lives forever it nearly cost me and my baby our lives.” She expressed thankfulness that both she and Lucia survived the ordeal Belfast Live.
