Aldi Ireland Launches Modern Pet-Friendly Range to Protect Homes and Cars

Pet owners in Ireland are showing excitement over Aldi’s latest offerings, designed to keep furry friends comfortable although protecting furniture and vehicles. The new range, hitting Aldi stores this week, includes a pet sofa overlay and a car seat cover, both aimed at minimizing pet-related mess and damage.

Pet Sofa Overlay: A Solution for Pet Hair and Scratches

Aldi’s Pet Sofa Overlay, available in stores from Thursday, February 19th, is a 100% polyester plush throw designed to shield sofas from pet hair, scratches, and general wear and tear. The overlay features a semi-circle mound mimicking a dog bed, with fabric extending to drape over the couch. It comes in “oat milk” or “stone” color options to complement home décor.

The overlay is designed for easy storage, rolling up like a standard throw blanket, and is machine washable at 30C for convenient cleaning. Aldi Ireland describes the item as “soft, comfortable and designed to shield your sofa from everyday pet life.”

Comfy Car Seat Cover for Pet Travel

Alongside the sofa overlay, Aldi is also releasing a Comfy Car Seat Cover. This cover protects car seats from pet hair and damage while providing a comfortable space for pets during travel. The cover attaches around the headrest, covering the seat back and cushion area, and features anti-slip dots to keep it securely in place.

Available in dark grey, light grey, or black, the car seat cover is made from a soft, fluffy material. Aldi Ireland states, “Road trips, vet runs and muddy adventures – this comfy pet car seat cover keeps your car protected while giving your pet a soft, secure place to settle in.” Like the sofa overlay, it is also machine washable.

Aldi’s History in Ireland

Aldi first arrived in Ireland in 1999, opening its first stores in Sandyford, Dublin, and Ballincollig, Cork. The German discount supermarket chain quickly gained popularity by offering high-quality products at low prices. During the economic recession of 2008-2012, Aldi’s appeal grew as consumers became more price-conscious.

Aldi continued to expand its presence in Ireland between 2013 and 2018, opening new stores and refurbishing existing ones. By 2018, the chain had over 130 stores nationwide. More recently, Aldi has focused on expanding its range of Irish-made products and supporting local producers, investing €10 million in its Grow with Aldi development program to support Irish suppliers [Irish Times].

As of 2023, Aldi operated over 140 stores in Ireland and has implemented sustainability initiatives, including reducing plastic packaging and increasing the availability of organic and eco-friendly products. The company has also introduced technological advancements like self-checkout systems and contactless payment options.

Recent Financial Performance

Despite revenue increasing by 1% to €2.12 billion, Aldi Ireland reported a pretax loss of €20.1 million last year [Irish Times]. This contrasts with a pretax profit of €16.82 million in 2023. Company directors attributed the loss to investments in keeping prices low for customers and increasing staffing and remuneration [Irish Times].
