Dating Events Surge in Popularity as Online Fatigue Grows
After years of swiping and scrolling, singles are increasingly turning to in-person dating events as a refreshing alternative to the often-exhausting world of online dating. A growing trend fueled by “online dating burnout” and a desire for more authentic connections, these events range from traditional speed dating to themed gatherings like board game nights and karaoke for singles.
The Rise of Experiential Dating
The shift towards in-person events is backed by data. Eventbrite reported a 63 percent increase in participation in dating events worldwide in 2023 compared to the previous year. Canada saw an even more significant boom, with a 76 percent increase in dating events between 2023 and 2024. Organizers are responding by offering more creative and engaging formats, moving beyond simple “meet and greet” scenarios.
These events now incorporate activities like board games, tantra evenings, and joint walks, transforming dating into an experience. Instead of standard interview-style questions, conversations revolve around shared activities, such as asking “Would you like another batch?” or “Shall we sing a duet?”
Online Dating Fatigue is Real
The growing popularity of in-person events coincides with a decline in user numbers for major dating apps. According to a 2024 report by the British regulator Ofcom, Tinder lost 23 percent of its users, Bumble lost 26 percent, and Hinge experienced a 9 percent drop between May 2023 and May 2024.
Research indicates that a substantial portion of Gen X, Z, and millennial users—roughly 80 percent—experience “online dating burnout,” characterized by emotional, psychological, and physical exhaustion. Negative experiences are also common, with 41 percent admitting to “ghosting” someone, 38 percent encountering false identities, and 27 percent experiencing “love bombing.”
Efficiency and Authenticity: The Appeal of Face-to-Face Interaction
Many singles find in-person events more efficient for assessing compatibility. As one dater noted, physical events allow for a quick verification of connection – within five minutes, it’s often clear whether a second date is desired. This contrasts sharply with the weeks of texting on apps that can sometimes lead to disappointment when meeting in person.
The fear of sharing personal data online also diminishes at physical events. While long-term relationships may not always result, these events often lead to additional dates, offering a faster path to connection.
Online Dating Still Plays a Role
Despite the rise of in-person events, online dating remains a dominant force. According to the Pew Research Center, one in ten engaged Americans met their current partner online in 2023, rising to one in five among those under 30. Tinder continues to be the most popular app, particularly among younger demographics.
A Stylish Alternative
Speed dating is no longer seen as a last resort but as a stylish alternative to the overwhelming nature of digital dating. The return to face-to-face interactions signals a desire for more authentic and efficient ways to connect in the modern dating landscape.
