Fat Tuesday Celebrations Sweeten Western Pennsylvania with Paczkis and King Cakes

Western Pennsylvania residents embraced Fat Tuesday with a rush to local bakeries for traditional treats like paczkis and king cakes, marking a sweet complete to the pre-Lenten season. Oakmont Bakery and Patti’s Pasticceria in White Oak were particularly busy, drawing crowds eager to partake in the festivities.

A Flourishing Tradition

The demand for Fat Tuesday treats began early, with customers lining up before bakeries even opened. The aroma of freshly baked paczkis and king cakes filled the air as people prepared for the day of indulgence. “It’s going to be hard not to buy everything,” said Catherine Malizia, a customer at Oakmont Bakery.

King Cakes and Polish Paczkis

King cakes, a Danish dough creation featuring cinnamon sugar, icing, and a small plastic baby hidden inside for good luck, were a popular choice. Patti Fiasco, owner of Patti’s Pasticceria, explained the significance of the treat, saying, “People love the King Cakes, which is made with this Danish dough, cinnamon sugar, the icing with the sugars and the little baby on top for good luck.”

Alongside king cakes, Polish paczkis were also in high demand. Paddy Cake Bakery in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood prepared 19 different flavors, anticipating a busy day. According to Hoodline, Oakmont Bakery produced approximately 1,500 pounds of dough daily to meet the demand for around six thousand paczkis.

Community and Memories

For many, Fat Tuesday is about more than just the sweets; it’s about community and creating lasting memories. “It’s our last year. We graduate in May, so we wanted to do something fun and memorable,” Malizia shared. Fiasco emphasized the importance of the community connection, stating, “The people in the community, they’ve been with us forever. They’re like family. Oh, we love these people here.”

Treats Available Beyond Fat Tuesday

Both Oakmont Bakery and Patti’s Pasticceria will continue to offer paczkis throughout the Lenten season, allowing those who missed Fat Tuesday to still enjoy the traditional treat. WTAE reports that the bakeries were bustling with customers all morning long.
