Plane Crash in Krayan, Nunukan – Residents Report Smoke and Witness Event

A plane crashed on the border of Indonesia and Malaysia, in the Krayan highlands of Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The incident prompted residents to photograph smoke rising from the suspected crash site.

Eyewitness Accounts

Jerry, a resident of Pa’ Bettung Village, East Krayan, reported seeing the plane pass overhead emitting thick black smoke. “The plane passed over my village. I don’t realize whether it was a passenger plane or a plane fuel carrier,” Jerry stated when contacted on Thursday afternoon Kompas.com.

Shortly after observing the smoke, Jerry witnessed the plane descend rapidly, followed by a loud boom. He estimates the crash site is located in the Pa’ Ramayo mountain forest area, approximately two hours from Pa’ Bettung Village Kompas.com.

Community Response and Reporting

Jerry immediately alerted the community using a loudspeaker and contacted local authorities, including Rony Firdaus, the Head of Krayan Induk District. He indicated the crash site is closer to Krayan Induk Kompas.com.

According to his phone’s timestamp, the crash occurred around 12:33 WIT (Western Indonesian Time). Jerry believes the aircraft was a fuel carrier, a suspicion supported by other witnesses who reported seeing someone ejected from the plane before the impact. He suggests this may be due to safety features on fuel-carrying aircraft Kompas.com.

Videos of the smoke and resident activity in Krayan have circulated on social media. Smoke was visible from Yuvai Semaring Airport in Krayan Kompas.com.

Dozens of residents are reportedly heading towards the crash site to offer assistance Kompas.com.

Preliminary Information

Initial reports indicate the plane belonged to Pelita Air and had recently unloaded fuel in Krayan before returning to Tarakan City Kompas.com. Although, as of the latest reports, no official statement has been released confirming the chronology or type of aircraft involved.
