Equinox’s ‘Optimize’ Membership Signals a Boom in Luxury Wellness
Demand for high-end wellness experiences is soaring, with Equinox’s $40,000-a-year “Optimize” membership boasting a waitlist of over 1,000 people. This surge in interest underscores a broader trend: health is increasingly viewed as a luxury good, particularly among affluent consumers.
The Rise of ‘Optimize’ and the Luxury Wellness Market
Launched in 2024, Equinox’s “Optimize by Equinox” membership offers a comprehensive suite of services, including personal training, nutrition guidance, sleep coaching, massage therapy, and a dedicated “health concierge.” According to Harvey Spevak, Equinox’s executive chairman, the program’s popularity reflects an “insatiable” demand for longevity and wellness products among the wealthy. CNBC reports that Spevak stated, “Health is the new luxury.”
The global wellness market is experiencing substantial growth, projected to reach nearly $10 trillion by 2030, up from $6.8 trillion in 2024, according to estimates from the Global Wellness Institute.
Expanding Beyond Fitness: Equinox’s Holistic Approach
Equinox is strategically expanding its offerings beyond traditional fitness clubs to encompass hotels, hospitality, personalized performance programs, and diagnostic services. The company opened its first hotel in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards in 2019 and plans to open a second location in Saudi Arabia. Spevak anticipates having nearly a dozen hotels worldwide within the next seven to eight years, with locations planned for the Middle East, the Caribbean, and the U.S.
Currently operating 115 fitness clubs, Equinox intends to add 40 more, including locations in Nashville, Tennessee; Toronto; Charlotte, North Carolina; and South Florida. The company is also investing in innovative wellness technologies and services, such as biohacking elements like contrast therapy, infrared saunas, IV drips, and hyperbolic chambers. Vogue
Personalized Health Programs and Data-Driven Wellness
The “Optimize” membership utilizes Function Health for biomarker testing, providing clients with comprehensive health assessments twice a year. This data informs personalized fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle programs. Equinox has also introduced “EQX ARC,” a personalized program for women designed around different life stages and health journeys, which also has a waitlist.
Equinox’s IV-drip lounge at the Hudson Yards hotel has already become a significant revenue stream, generating seven-figure revenue. The Equinox Hudson Yards location offers a comprehensive wellness experience, including group fitness classes, saltwater pools, and ample space for training, socializing, and community building.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
Whereas Equinox is a private company and does not disclose detailed financials, Spevak reported that 2025 was a “record year” and expects continued growth in 2026. The company is also seeing increased interest from other high-end consumer brands seeking partnerships in the health and wellness space. Spevak noted that Equinox is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this trend due to its established brand authority and equity.
