Elementary School Student Severely Injured in Motorbike Collision in Kulon Progo

KULON PROGO, Indonesia – A 10-year-aged elementary school student, identified only by the initials DN, sustained serious injuries in a collision involving a large motorbike (moge) and another motorbike on Jalan Purworejo – Jogja, Palihan Village, Kapanewon Temon, Kulon Progo Regency, on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

Details of the Incident

DN, a student at a local football school (SSB), suffered a broken leg, with the bone visibly protruding. His father, Abdullah alias Aab, explained that the accident occurred as they were crossing the road to purchase takjil (traditional snacks to break the fast) around 4:30 PM local time.

The impact threw DN into a nearby river. “When he was hit, my child was thrown into the river. Deva’s bones came out on the right. Now he is still being monitored by doctors,” Aab stated from the Wates Regional General Hospital (RSUD).

Account of the Collision

Aab recounted that he was riding a Jupiter MX motorbike when a speeding motorbike traveling east collided with him as he began to cross the road. A relative, Sarah, described the scene as horrifying, noting the extensive damage to Aab’s motorbike, with the tires detached.

Aab also sustained injuries, including an open fracture in his lower right leg and a broken wrist. Both father and son are currently receiving intensive treatment at Wates Regional Hospital and underwent bone surgery on Monday morning, according to another relative, Iyas.

DN’s Aspirations and Recovery

The family hopes for a smooth recovery for both DN and Aab. DN, a striker for SSB Karangwuluh, is a promising young athlete who recently scored two goals in a tournament at Cangkring Stadium. Aab recalled his son’s enthusiasm for football, noting that DN had briefly stopped practicing due to feeling unwell but was eager to resume. “At first there was SSB, but he said he was weak. So he didn’t practice. He was really enthusiastic after that. He said he wanted to continue practicing,” Aab said.
