Israeli Tourism to Bulgaria Impacted by Middle East Conflict
The ongoing military conflict in the Middle East, which began on February 28, is affecting tourism in Bulgaria, with cancellations of reservations and stranded tourists reported at winter resorts. Although Bulgaria remains a key strategic partner for Israel in southeastern Europe, the immediate impact on the tourism sector is becoming apparent.
Cancellations and Economic Concerns
Reports indicate that hundreds of reservations from Israeli tourists have been cancelled, particularly in Borovets. Blagovesta Tomova, president of the union of owners and hoteliers in Borovets, stated that 108 reservations had been cancelled between February 28th and March 7th, 2026, representing 770 overnight stays.
Similar cancellations have been confirmed in Bansko and Pamporovo. The Union of Tourism Businesses in Bansko is seeking government support to mitigate job losses. Mitko Kolev, a hotelier in Bansko, believes that tourists from Western Europe may offset some of the expected losses.
Bulgaria-Israel Relations
Despite the current disruptions, Bulgaria and Israel maintain strong ties. Bulgaria is considered one of Israel’s most reliable partners in southeastern Europe, with cooperation in politics, security, economy, trade, and tourism.
Popular destinations for Israeli tourists in Bulgaria include Sofia, Nessebar, Varna, Bansko, Samokov, Borovets, and Plovdiv.
Bulgaria’s history of protecting its Jewish population during World War II has cemented a strong bond between the two countries.
Ski Season Outlook
January and early February are generally considered the best time for skiing in Borovets, with stable snow conditions. The impact of the cancellations on the overall ski season remains to be seen, but the industry is hoping for continued interest from tourists in Western Europe and other regions.
