Lippo Group Donates Land for Indonesian Affordable Housing Project
The Indonesian government has secured a 30-hectare land grant from Lippo Group to accelerate the construction of affordable housing units as part of the ambitious 3 Million Houses Program. The land, located in Cikarang, West Java, is earmarked for the development of approximately 140,000 apartment units intended for low-income residents.
Land Donation and Project Goals
Lippo Group’s donation aims to contribute significantly to President Prabowo Subianto’s pledge to construct 3 million new dwellings during his term. The project will be financed by Danantara Indonesia, with construction slated to begin following the land handover on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
“This is historic because the private sector handed it over to the government,” stated Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Chairman of the Housing Task Force, during the inauguration of the land handover. “The Lippo Group gave more than 30 hectares of large land to be built and handed over to our people. It is hoped that this will provide 140 thousand apartment units for our people who wish to own a house.”
Stakeholder Involvement
The land handover ceremony was attended by Lippo Group founder Mochtar Riady and his son, James Riady, the current leader of Lippo Group. Rosan Roeslani, CEO of Danantara, confirmed that his company would immediately commence construction, providing the necessary financing for multiple towers on the donated land.
“Lippo Group has given 30 hectares of land to the government, to us Danantara so that it can be built as a place to live for low-income people,” Roeslani explained. “This was born from an extraordinary sense of togetherness and humanity.”
Broader Housing Initiatives
This land donation is part of a larger effort to address Indonesia’s housing needs. In June 2025, Qatar pledged a US$2.5 billion investment to support the construction of 1 million affordable homes in Indonesia. South China Morning Post
The government is also exploring various funding models, including state assets, business entities, and private sector financing, to achieve its housing goals. Voi.id
Challenges and Considerations
Despite the progress, challenges remain in realizing the 3 Million Houses Program. These include securing land, managing construction costs, and integrating housing with existing urban infrastructure. South China Morning Post
Concerns have also been raised regarding the quality and habitability of some proposed housing units, with some models falling below legal standards for minimum size. Tempo.co
