New York State Expands Broadband Access with $36 Million in Funding

New York State is bolstering its efforts to bridge the digital divide with the reopening of the Municipal Infrastructure Program (MIP), offering up to $36 million in funding for broadband infrastructure projects across the state. The program, a key component of the state’s ConnectALL initiative, aims to connect unserved and underserved communities to high-speed internet through publicly controlled and open-access networks.

ConnectALL Initiative and MIP Goals

The ConnectALL initiative, launched to build New York State’s digital infrastructure and connect all New Yorkers, is central to these efforts . The MIP specifically focuses on constructing open access, public broadband infrastructure . Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the program’s success, noting that it has already funded over 2,300 miles of new fiber and 68 wireless hubs across New York .

Funding Details and Project Scope

To date, the Municipal Infrastructure Program has allocated $268 million to active projects in 24 counties . This funding supports projects that will benefit more than 96,000 homes and businesses . The current round of funding, up to $36 million, will be available through April 30, 2026, with projects required to be completed by December 31, 2026 .

Eligible Uses of Funding

MIP financing can be used for several key areas:

• Last Mile Infrastructure: Covering wiring, pole replacement, preparation work, and radios used by internet service providers. This includes funding for buildings and the necessary connections from fiber optic or cable runs.
• Fiber Connections: Supporting connections to internet exchange points or data centers, including routers, switches, and other interconnectivity equipment.
• Infrastructure Acquisition: Funding the acquisition of existing infrastructure assets, provided it improves last-mile service delivery.

Stakeholder Support

The initiative has garnered support from various state leaders. Senator Charles Schumer emphasized that internet access is a necessity, comparable to electricity . Application Process and Review

Applications for the ConnectALL program were accepted beginning February 2, 2026, with a deadline of April 30, 2026 . Authorities have initiated a review process to evaluate submitted proposals.
