Mercedes-Benz VLE: Electric Minivan Production Anchored in Spain
Stuttgart, Germany – On Tuesday, March 10, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new electric VLE (Versatile Luxury Electric) minivan, marking a significant milestone in the company’s 140-year automotive history. The VLE, built on the new VAN.EA architecture, will be exclusively manufactured in Vitoria, Spain, serving as a global production hub.
A New Electric Platform
The VLE is the first model to be built on the VAN.EA platform, a modular system designed specifically for Mercedes-Benz’s electric vans and minivans. This new architecture reconfigures the brand’s approach to electric vehicle development.
Interior and Features
Mercedes-Benz aims for the VLE to be more than just a vehicle, envisioning it as a customizable living space. Key features include a one-piece Sky View panoramic roof and a retractable 31.3-inch 8K screen for an immersive experience. The interior boasts versatile seating arrangements, with seats that can be adjusted manually or via an app, a feature the brand calls “seat ballet.” The vehicle can accommodate between five and eight passengers.
Production in Vitoria, Spain
The Vitoria plant in the Basque Country has received a €1.25 billion investment from Mercedes-Benz to expand and adapt for the production of the VLE. This investment secures a high-value workload for the Spanish industry, attracts technological investment, and positions the plant as a global reference within Mercedes-Benz Vans. The Vitoria plant has decades of experience manufacturing V-range vehicles.
Performance and Specifications
The VLE will be available in two versions:
- VLE 300: 203 kW (272 HP) with a range exceeding 700 km (WLTP).
- VLE 400 4MATIC: 305 kW (409 HP) with all-wheel drive, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.
Both versions share a 115 kWh battery and 800-volt technology, enabling a range of 355 km to be added in just 15 minutes of charging. The VLE has a low aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of 0.25.

The VLE incorporates the latest generation MB.OS operating system powered by artificial intelligence. The MBUX Superscreen combines three screens under one glass surface. Rear passengers benefit from a retractable 79 cm widescreen display with 8K resolution. Additional features include Burmester 3D surround sound and compatibility with video conferencing apps. The AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent height control and rear steering (up to 7º) enhance ride comfort and maneuverability.
