Wembanyama’s MVP and DPOY Pursuit Faces Crucial Games Played Hurdle

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is playing at an exceptional level, openly expressing his ambition to win both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) awards this season. However, a new NBA rule regarding games played could jeopardize his eligibility for these honors.

Wembanyama’s Stellar Performance and Award Aspirations

Following a 115-102 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on March 14, 2026, where he recorded 32 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, four blocks and two steals, Wembanyama stated his focus is on maintaining peak physical condition to contend for both MVP, and DPOY. ESPN reports Wembanyama said, “Right now in my mind is taking great care of my body cause I also want to win the MVP, and the Defensive Player of the Year. So I’m trying to press the gas from now until the end of the season. Really seize care of my treatment, take care of my sleep, take care of my routine and reveal up for my team.”

The 65-Game Threshold

The NBA implemented a new rule before the 2023-24 season requiring players to participate in at least 65 games to be eligible for major awards, including MVP and DPOY. This rule aims to discourage load management. ESPN notes this has caused frustration among fans, players, and teams.

Wembanyama’s Games Played Situation

As of March 15, 2026, Wembanyama has already missed 15 games due to injury – 12 in November with a calf strain, two in January with a hyperextended knee, and one due to a sore ankle. This leaves him with limited room for further absences. He can miss only two of the Spurs’ remaining 15 games to meet the 65-game requirement.

MVP Prospects and Competition

Currently, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the strong favorite to win the MVP award, averaging 31.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.6 assists whereas shooting efficiently. He is -850 to win back-to-back MVP awards. Wembanyama is second in the odds at +1100. Wembanyama’s chances of winning MVP hinge on Gilgeous-Alexander falling short of the 65-game threshold, which is considered unlikely as Gilgeous-Alexander has already played 55 games and only needs to play in 10 of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s remaining 15 games.

Dominance on Defense and DPOY Favoritism

Wembanyama is a heavy -1200 favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year. He leads the league in blocks per game (3.0) and is second in defensive rebounds (9.2). His presence significantly alters opponents’ offensive strategies, resulting in a 107.5 defensive rating for the Spurs when he’s on the court and opponents shooting 7.2% below the league average at the rim.

Spurs’ Success and Future Outlook

The San Antonio Spurs have been performing well, boasting a league-best 17-2 record since February 1, including a 5-1 record during their recent six-game homestand. Coach Mitch Johnson emphasized the value of the team’s experiences and lessons learned during this stretch. Pounding the Rock reports Johnson said, “It’s been really good for us to go through these games and find out about other teams and find out about ourselves.”
