Vietnam Prioritizes Workplace Meal Quality for Employee Wellbeing

Vietnam is increasingly focused on improving the quality of meals provided to workers, recognizing the critical link between nutrition, health, and labor productivity. Driven by initiatives from the Vietnam Confederation of Trade Unions and provincial federations, companies are being encouraged – and in some cases required – to enhance canteen services and provide meal subsidies to employees.

Growing Emphasis on Employee Nutrition

The Executive Board of the Vietnam Confederation of Trade Unions issued Resolution No. 07c/NQ-BCH, emphasizing the “Quality of Workplace Meals.” This resolution sets a minimum allowance of VND 15,000 (approximately $0.60 USD as of March 16, 2026) per meal and urges companies to improve upon this standard. The goal is to ensure employees receive nutritious meals that support their health and energy levels throughout the workday.

Company Initiatives and Investments

Several companies are already taking proactive steps to improve workplace meals. Hong Duc Education Equipment Joint Stock Company, for example, provides meals to over 3,600 employees with a subsidy of VND 17,000 per meal. The company has invested in a dedicated community canteen and regularly adapts meal plans to meet employees’ nutritional needs. According to Bui Thi Hong Hiep, chairwoman of the works council at Hong Duc, the canteen and cooking areas are maintained to high standards of cleanliness and ventilation, with strict checks on food ingredient origin and quality. Hong Duc Education Equipment Joint Stock Company is located in Lot C, Le Mon Industrial Park, Quang Hung Ward, Thanh Hoa City, Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam.

Similarly, Hong Duc Education Equipment Joint Stock Company requires its food supplier to adhere to stringent food safety standards. The company’s quality management team conducts daily checks on ingredients, processing methods, and portion sizes to ensure adequate nutritional intake. Currently, the company offers a meal allowance of VND 25,000 per meal, with portion sizes adjusted as needed. Vu Ngoc Tuan, deputy director and chairman of the company union, highlights the role of collective agreements in driving these improvements.

Provincial and Union Efforts

The Provincial Federation of Trade Unions is actively directing unions to engage in dialogue and negotiation with employers to improve meal quality. As of recent reports, 384 out of 685 companies with union organizations in the province are now providing meal subsidies ranging from VND 15,000 to VND 25,000 per meal. Unions are also intensifying controls and monitoring to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and worker welfare policies.

The Union Lunch Program

Unions across the province are collaborating with departments and employers to implement the “Union Lunch” program. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of workplace meals and encourage companies to prioritize food safety, hygiene, and employee health. The program has been well-received by union members and employees.

Looking Ahead

The Provincial Federation of Trade Unions plans to continue its educational and mobilization efforts to encourage companies to improve meal quality. This includes incorporating meal quality provisions into collective agreements and collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor food safety and hygiene. These efforts are expected to contribute to a healthier workforce, increased labor productivity, and more harmonious industrial relations in Vietnam.
