Alfred and Dosso Set for 60m Clash at World Indoor Championships

The women’s world 60m lead is currently shared by Julien Alfred and Zaynab Dosso, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. Both athletes achieved a time of 6.99 seconds in February, with Dosso recording her time at the Copernicus Cup in the same arena that will host the championships.

Alfred’s Championship Pedigree

Since winning the world indoor title in Glasgow in 2024, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred has continued to excel, becoming an Olympic 100m champion and securing a 200m silver medal. She also earned a bronze medal in the 100m at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. Her recent time of 6.99 at the Tyson Invitational last month was her fastest since winning gold in Glasgow with a time of 6.98, and equals the area record. This performance places her joint second on the world all-time list. World Athletics

A victory in Toruń would make Alfred the sixth woman to win two world indoor titles in the 60m event.

Dosso’s Pursuit of Gold

Zaynab Dosso, representing Italy, is also in peak form. The 26-year-ancient broke the seven-second barrier for the first time at the Copernicus Cup in Toruń. She aims to improve upon her silver medal from the previous World Indoor Championships in Nanjing and complete her world indoor medal set, having previously won bronze in 2024. World Athletics

Dosso has won all four finals she has competed in this year, including victories at World Indoor Tour Gold events in Toruń, Ostrava, and Belgrade, as well as the Italian national title.

Contenders and Championship History

Mujinga Kambundji, the defending champion, will not be competing due to recently giving birth. However, Patrizia van der Weken, who won bronze alongside Dosso in Nanjing, will be in contention. Van der Weken holds the Luxembourg national record of 7.01 seconds, achieved whereas finishing second to Dosso at the Copernicus Cup.

The top four finishers from that race – Alfred, Dosso, van der Weken, and Great Britain’s Amy Hunt – will all compete in Toruń. Hunt ran a personal best of 7.04 at the Copernicus Cup, while home favorite Ewa Swoboda, the Polish record-holder, also aims for a podium finish after winning silver in Glasgow two years ago.

Great Britain will also be represented by Dina Asher-Smith, who won the British title in 7.05 seconds, just ahead of Hunt. Jacious Sears of the United States will compete after winning the US title in 7.04 seconds. Jamaica will be represented by two-time world relay medalist Jonielle Smith and 2022 world U20 200m champion Brianna Lyston.

Ana Carolina Azevedo of Brazil will look to build on her South American indoor title, while Karolína Maňasová of Czechia has also run 7.05 seconds this year, setting a new national record. Italy’s Kelly Doualla, the European U20 100m and 4x100m champion, will be the youngest athlete at the championships at 16 years old.
