A substantial backlog of ginseng root is currently being held in storage facilities throughout Marathon County, Wisconsin, presenting an atypical situation for teh stateS renowned ginseng industry.On a recent humid June day, warehouses were observed packed with hundreds of boxes containing the valuable root. while a significant shipment of approximately 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilograms) was recently dispatched to China, over 150,000 pounds remains in storage – a markedly higher volume than typically seen at this point in the year.
A Disrupted Cycle
Typically,by the summer months,these warehouses would be largely emptied,allowing growers to focus on essential maintenance and preparation for the upcoming growing season.This includes servicing equipment and preparing shade cloth used to regulate sunlight exposure for the plants. The current surplus disrupts this established cycle, creating logistical challenges for producers.
