A Just Transition: Centering Gender Equality in Climate Action

The climate crisis disproportionately affects women, girls, and marginalized communities. Recognizing this urgency, the global climate framework, including the Paris Agreement, emphasizes gender equality as a cornerstone of effective climate action. Yet, despite these commitments, the underrepresentation of women and a lack of broader inclusion continue to hinder progress.

This year’s COP29 presents a crucial opportunity to address these shortcomings. World leaders and negotiators will undertake a comprehensive review of the Enhanced Lima Work Programme on Gender and its Gender Action Plan, adopted in 2020. To ensure a just and equitable transition, a renewed and decisive commitment to gender-responsive climate action is paramount.

ODI Europe and UN Women: Advancing Gender-Responsive Climate Action

ODI Europe and UN Women are hosting a pivotal event to shed light on key priorities and challenges at the intersection of gender and climate. Taking place on Monday, November 4th, both in-person in Brussels from 16:00 – 17:30 CET (15:00 – 16:30 GMT) and online. This "Gender Talks" event will focus on:

  • Enhancing National Determined Contributions (NDCs): Exploring how to better integrate gender equality and inclusiveness into national climate action plans.
  • Strategic Planning for COP29: Developing strategies to ensure a renewed and decisive commitment to gender-responsive climate action at the upcoming COP29 summit.
