Deshaun Watson’s Season Over, Achilles Injury Raises Questions About Future
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s season appears to be finished after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Watson will undergo surgery soon to repair the injury.
While the surgery itself will address the immediate issue, the nature of the procedure remains uncertain. Watson is reportedly considering both conventional surgery and a newer “speed bridge” technique. The latter, employed by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers last season, is believed to facilitate a quicker recovery.
Despite Rodgers’ utilizing the speed bridge procedure, he was unable to return to the field after tearing his Achilles in Week 1. Watson’s injury occurred in Week 7, meaning even with expedited recovery, he would miss the remainder of this season.
A faster return to action could potentially offer Watson a head start during the offseason. However, considering the tumultuous nature of his tenure with the Browns, the team’s desire to move on is understandable. Watson’s substantial guaranteed salaries for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, regardless of his health status, continue to pose a significant burden on the Browns’ salary cap.
Watson’s future with the Browns, therefore, remains shrouded in uncertainty.
