To enable effective transfer from simulation to physical hardware—a persistent challenge in robotics—the researchers developed techniques for zero-shot sim-to-real learning. This included an iterative approach to defining task distributions grounded in real-world conditions, which automatically generated a curriculum for training. The system as well incorporated real-time adaptation capabilities, allowing the robot to adjust its strategy during matches against opponents it had not encountered before. The technical implementation involved sophisticated hardware and sensing systems. The robot utilized twenty motion-capture cameras, a pair of 125 FPS cameras, and a six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm mounted on two linear rails. A specially designed table tennis paddle was attached to the robot arm, and visual data from the cameras was processed using multiple convolutional neural networks. To prevent catastrophic forgetting in these networks during training, the researchers employed seventeen different convolutional neural networks—one for each low-level skill controller. Visual input was combined with proprioceptive data about the paddle’s position to generate values for a look-up table that forms the core of the high-level controller.
