Apple’s Home Hardware Lead Joins Oura, Sparking Upheaval in Apple’s Smart Home Plans

Brian Lynch, a veteran of over two decades at Apple and most recently the senior director overseeing Apple’s home hardware engineering, has departed to join smart ring maker Oura as its senior vice president of hardware engineering. The move, reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac, signals a potential shift in Apple’s smart home strategy and has caused “fresh upheaval” within the team, according to sources.

A Significant Loss for Apple’s Home Ambitions

Lynch’s departure is particularly noteworthy given Apple’s ongoing efforts to develop a more robust presence in the smart home market. Oura has been actively recruiting talent from Apple in recent years, highlighting the attractiveness of the smart ring company to experienced hardware engineers. Prior to leading the home hardware division, Lynch was a key figure on Apple’s now-discontinued car development team, and reported to Matt Costello, who also oversees audio engineering and Beats products. Costello, in turn, reports to Apple’s hardware engineering chief, John Ternus.

Delays and Future Plans for Apple’s Smart Home Ecosystem

Apple’s ambitious smart home plans have faced recent setbacks, most notably delays in the launch of its rumored smart home hub. The launch is now targeted for September 2026, pushed back due to ongoing development challenges with Siri, as 9to5Mac reported. Beyond the hub, Apple is also reportedly working on a range of other smart home devices, including:

  • A home security and automation sensor
  • A more advanced tabletop robot (planned for 2027)
  • Smart glasses
  • A wearable AI pendant or pin
  • AirPods with cameras

Previous Departures and Leadership Structure

Lynch is not the first high-profile departure from Apple’s home hardware group. DJ Novotney, the former vice president of program management for the home hardware group, left the company in 2024. Currently, the home team is led by Matt Costello, who also manages audio engineering and Beats products. John Ternus continues to play a central role in Apple’s smart home efforts, viewing it as crucial to the company’s future growth.

Impact on Oura

For Oura, securing Lynch’s expertise represents a significant win. As senior vice president of hardware engineering, he will be instrumental in driving the development of future Oura smart ring iterations and potentially expanding the company’s hardware portfolio.
