This Friday, Pakistan experienced one of the bloodiest days in recent years, with three attacks on mosques which have caused at least 56 deaths and dozens of injuries, although the number may even increase since it is feared that there are many faithful among the rubble.
The most serious occurred in the troubled Pakistani province of Balochistan. At least 52 people died and more than 50 were injured in a suicide attack at a religious celebration to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, which comes amid an increase in attacks claimed by militant groups in the west of the country, raising demands on security forces ahead of the national elections scheduled for January of the next year.
“The terrorist blew himself up near the vehicle of the Deputy Superintendent of Police,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Munir Ahmed told Reuters, adding that The explosion took place near a mosque where people were gathering for a procession on the occasion of Muhammad’s birthday, which is a holiday.
At least 58 people were injured, said district health officer Abdul Rasheed, adding that the number of victims could increase, since many people were in serious condition.
