Audi’s China-Exclusive Electric Station Wagon Faces Slow Sales Despite Competitive Pricing
A new Audi station wagon, boasting over 500 kW of power and priced similarly to a Škoda Octavia, is available—but only in China. Despite initial hype and a competitive price point, sales have been underwhelming, raising questions about market preferences and brand perception in the world’s largest automotive market.
The AUDI E5 Sportback: Power and Price
Launched in China under the AUDI brand, the E5 Sportback offers a powerful electric drivetrain, with top versions delivering up to 579 kW. The base model, with 220 kW, accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and utilizes a 76 kWh LFP battery. Remarkably, this base model is priced at 686,000 CZK (approximately $30,000 USD as of February 28, 2026), comparable to the price of a basic Audi A1 Sportback in the Czech Republic.
Disappointing Sales Figures
Despite generating 10,000 pre-orders in just 30 minutes upon its August 2025 launch, the E5 Sportback has struggled to maintain momentum. Sales figures reveal only 7,070 units sold, falling to 420 cars in January 2026. This performance placed it at 345th in sales rankings, even trailing less modern vehicles like the Fukang eElysee, an electric version of the Citroën C-Elysée.
Discounts and Financing Options
AUDI has responded to the sluggish sales with discounts of up to 90,000 CZK (approximately $3,900 USD), bringing the base price down to 617,000 CZK – roughly equivalent to the price of a base Škoda Octavia in the Czech Republic. Customers are likewise offered five-year, 0% interest installment plans or seven-year low-interest financing options, coupled with purchase tax subsidies.
Competition and Market Dynamics
The E5 Sportback faces stiff competition from domestic rivals like the Zeekr 007GT and the Xiaomi SU7, which are favored by Chinese consumers. The Xiaomi SU7, in particular, achieved the tenth best-selling car in China in 2023 and, despite quality concerns, briefly held the top spot in January 2026 with its YU7 SUV model.
Future Plans: Expanding the AUDI Lineup
Audi is expanding its China-exclusive lineup with the E7X SUV, built on the same SAIC ADP platform as the E5. The E7X will feature a larger 109 kWh battery, exceeding 500 kW of power, and will also be available in a serial hybrid version, catering to the popularity of such vehicles in the Chinese market.
The AUDI E5 Sportback’s experience highlights the unique challenges and competitive landscape of the Chinese automotive market, where brand recognition, consumer preferences, and rapid innovation play crucial roles in determining success.
