Amazon and Spotify Enhance Audiobook Experiences with Immersive Reading Features
As Spotify expands its audiobook offerings, Amazon’s Audible is responding with new features designed to integrate audio and text, providing users with more versatile ways to enjoy books. Both companies are focused on enhancing engagement and catering to diverse learning and reading preferences.
Audible’s “Read & Listen” Feature
Audible has launched an “immersion reading” feature, now called “Read & Listen,” within its app. This feature synchronizes ebook text with audiobook narration, allowing readers to follow along visually while listening. Users can seamlessly switch between formats across devices, with the text highlighting in real-time as the narration progresses. The feature requires ownership of both the ebook and audiobook versions of a title, though Amazon is offering discounted audiobook options for customers who already own the ebook.
Hundreds of thousands of titles are currently supported in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French, with initial availability in the U.S., followed by the U.K., Australia, and Germany in the coming months. Audible automatically identifies Kindle ebooks with matching audiobooks within the app to help users discover eligible titles.
Spotify’s Expanding Audiobook Presence
These developments follow Spotify’s recent entry into the audiobook market and announcement of physical book sales. Spotify’s audiobook feature allows users to sync their listening and offline reading progress.
Benefits of Combined Reading and Listening
Amazon highlights research suggesting that combining reading and listening can improve focus, and comprehension. Internal data also indicates that customers who both read and listen consume nearly twice as much content monthly compared to audiobook-only users. The feature is particularly beneficial for language learners, students, and those seeking to accelerate their reading pace.
The synchronized experience can also aid in pronunciation, especially in complex fantasy novels with unique character names. As Andy Tsao, Chief Product Officer at Audible, stated, “Audiobooks count as reading, but now at Audible, you can read with your eyes too. Read & Listen gives book lovers the best of both worlds.”
Impact on Publishers
Amazon assures that the new “Read & Listen” feature will not affect publishers’ royalty payments.
