Austin Shooting Investigated as Potential Act of Terrorism

A mass shooting in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning left three people dead and 14 injured, prompting an investigation by the FBI into potential ties to terrorism. The shooter, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne of Pflugerville, Texas, was fatally shot by police after opening fire on a crowd outside Buford’s bar in downtown Austin.

Details of the Shooting

According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect drove around the block near the bar several times before firing at people on the bar’s patio and in front of the establishment. He then exited his vehicle and continued shooting at pedestrians walking along Sixth Street. Police quickly engaged the suspect, returning fire and killing him at the scene. A pistol and a rifle were recovered.

The FBI is investigating “indicators on the suspect and in his vehicle” that suggest a “potential nexus to terrorism,” stated FBI Special Agent Alex Doran. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not yet determined a definitive motive. CBS News reported that the suspect had an Iranian flag in his home, images of Iranian leaders, and a Quran in his vehicle.

Suspect Background

PBS NewsHour reported that three of the 14 injured individuals were in critical condition.
