October 29, 2025 – allianz is pushing the new mobility of autonomous driving with great commitment. The insurer expects that all vehicles in Germany will be autonomous in 2060. The alliance is currently calling for more real test tracks so that more people can gain experience with self-driving cars. Car insurance will be considerably cheaper when autonomous driving is common.

Autonomous vehicles will be significantly cheaper to insure. “The frequency of damage caused by autonomous driving drops by 50 percent,” explained Frank Sommerfeld, CEO of Allianz Insurance AGon Tuesday on the 13. Allianz Motor Day.
However, insurance premiums would not fall by half in the future when autonomous cars dominate the roads. “The prices are falling significantly, but because there is much more high-quality technology such as cameras and sensors in the autonomous vehicles, each individual damage is becoming more expensive,” explained the Allianz manager.
However, Allianz does not expect a world of autonomous vehicles until 2060. Then the classic classification based on no-claims classes would no longer play a role. The insurance premium would be calculated based on the security of the artificial intelligence system behind the vehicle.
Nothing changes for car accident victims
The insurer works with manny start-ups and vehicle manufacturers that are developing autonomous vehicles.

“We collect the accident data from test fields and pass it back to the operators so that the technology can be improved,” explained Christian Sahr, head of the Allianz Center for Technology (THAT).
“Nothing changes for the victims of car accidents with autonomous driving,” emphasized Sahr. “We continue to insure the vehicle.” However, it becomes much more difficult for the insurer to determine who has to pay for the damage. The insurance company must determine whether the accident was caused by a mistake by the car manufacturer, a supplier or by technical monitoring.
