Bali Safety Ranking Improves to 84/100, Scams Remain Top Tourist Concern

Bali continues to be a popular vacation destination, and recent data indicates an increase in perceived safety among tourists. The Bali Sun Traveler Safety Index has risen to 84/100 this week, up from 82/100 two weeks prior, placing the island firmly in the “Stable” safety zone.

Traveler Safety Index Methodology

The Bali Sun Traveler Safety Index utilizes a Hybrid Verification Model, combining real-time sentiment analysis from user feedback with a 24-hour editorial audit by a human team. This process filters out anomalies like bot activity or misinformation. The index is also informed by on-the-ground reporting and analysis of local news, government announcements, and community updates. The index is created entirely by humans and is not generated or influenced by AI.

Key Safety Concerns

While overall safety is improving, scams remain the most frequently reported issue by tourists in Bali, accounting for 26 reports in the last 30 days. The most common scam reported is related to money exchange.

Efforts to Combat Illegal Money Changers

Bali Governor Wayan Koster recently met with Bank Indonesia and the Bali Foreign Exchange Affiliation (APVA) to address the prevalence of illegal money changers in tourist areas like Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak. As of the finish of 2025, there were 601 licensed non-bank money changer (KUPVA) offices in Bali, the second-highest number in Indonesia.

Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities recommend using licensed money exchange outlets to minimize the risk of scams. Tourists are also encouraged to report any criminal incidents to the Bali Police at 110.

Bali Tourism Statistics

Bali welcomed more than 7 million international tourists in 2025, making money exchange services crucial for the tourism industry. The majority of licensed money exchange outlets are located in Badung Regency, Gianyar Regency, and Denpasar City, which are home to popular resorts in areas like Sanur, Canggu, Uluwatu, and Ubud.
