Global Film Festival Leaders Rally Behind Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle

A coalition of over 30 international film festival directors has publicly voiced its support for Tricia Tuttle, the director of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), amid political pressure following the festival’s 76th edition. The show of solidarity underscores the importance of artistic freedom and institutional independence in the face of increasing scrutiny.

Political Backlash and Industry Support

The Berlinale faced controversy during its February 12-22 run, initially criticized for perceived censorship of political discussion. This shifted when award recipients used their acceptance speeches to express support for Palestine and Gaza, sparking a political backlash. Reports in the German media subsequently suggested Tuttle’s position was under threat.

Following these reports, a petition garnering over 3,000 signatures from film professionals, including Sean Baker, Todd Haynes, Tilda Swinton, and Kleber Mendonça Filho, emerged in support of Tuttle. More than 500 Berlinale staffers also penned an open letter expressing their backing.

Joint Statement from Festival Directors

The joint statement, signed by leaders from prominent festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Sundance, and others, emphasizes the need to protect spaces for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas. It reads, “As film festival directors and leaders, we stand in support of Tricia Tuttle’s wish to continue as Berlinale Festival Director, in full trust and with institutional independence.”

The statement acknowledges the “mounting pressures on film festivals everywhere to navigate volatile times” and the importance of maintaining a “safe space for the exchange of cinema, and of ideas.” It stresses the need for “grace, respect and solidarity” among all stakeholders – audiences, creators, festival teams, partners, industry, media, and institutions – to prevent the erosion of these vital cultural spaces.

Key Signatories

The letter was signed by:

  • Thierry Frémaux (Cannes Film Festival)
  • Cameron Bailey (Toronto International Film Festival)
  • Eugene Hernandez (Sundance Film Festival)
  • Kristy Matheson (BFI London Film Festival)
  • Giona A. Nazzaro (Locarno Film Festival)
  • Vanja Kaludjercic (International Film Festival Rotterdam)
  • José Luis Rebordinos (San Sebastian International Film Festival)
  • Karel Och (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)
  • and 23 other festival leaders.

The Importance of Artistic Freedom

The collective support for Tuttle highlights a broader concern about the preservation of artistic freedom and the ability of film festivals to navigate politically charged environments. The statement argues that festivals must embrace “discomfort,” encourage “expansive debates,” and allow for “unexpected – and sometimes conflicting – perspectives.”

As the Berlinale’s governing body prepares to discuss Tuttle’s future, the unified front presented by these global festival leaders sends a clear message about the value of independent artistic expression and the importance of protecting the integrity of film festivals worldwide.
