Search Ends in Tragedy on the Yenisei
Authorities in the Tuva Republic of Russia have recovered the bodies of two 12-year-old girls from the Yenisei River, ending a search operation that began after the children went missing on July 1. Regional head Vladislav Khovalyg confirmed the discovery, noting that formal identification procedures are currently underway to finalize the investigation.
Discovery Follows Multi-Week Operation
Search teams located the two bodies following a multi-week effort. According to the regional branch of Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, one of the bodies was recovered near a village located southwest of Kyzyl, the capital city of the Tuva Republic. The girls had been reported missing since July 1, when they disappeared from their homes in Kyzyl.
Law enforcement officials initiated a search operation shortly after the girls were reported missing. During the initial stages of the investigation, searchers found personal items belonging to the children, including their cellphones and shoes, along the riverbanks. The Yenisei River, a major waterway that originates in Mongolia and flows northward through central Siberia toward the Arctic Ocean, had been a primary focus for search teams since the disappearance.
Evaluating Potential Causes of Death
Regional authorities are currently working to determine the cause of the deaths. Prior to the discovery of the bodies, investigators informed state media outlets that they were evaluating three primary scenarios: accidental drowning, suicide, or potential foul play.

Official Response from Republic Leadership
The recovery has drawn official attention from the leadership of the republic. Vladislav Khovalyg addressed the incident in a post on the Telegram messaging platform, characterizing the event as a “heavy and painful moment” for the region. As the investigation continues, officials are awaiting the results of forensic examinations to provide definitive answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Geographic Risks in Southern Siberia
The incident occurred in the Tuva Republic, a region situated in southern Siberia. Kyzyl, where the girls resided, is located approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of the border between Russia and Mongolia. The Yenisei River serves as a significant geographical feature in the area, often presenting environmental hazards during the summer months. Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the final forensic findings or the timeline for the conclusion of the criminal inquiry.
